Novelist Peter Behrens’ fascination with his Irish-Canadian family served as the inspiration for his two latest novels, The Law of Dreams and, most recently, The O’Briens. In the video below, Behrens discusses The O’Briens and reads, from its pages, a letter from a World War II soldier to his wife back home in Montreal.

Peter Behrens is the author of The Law of Dreams (which received Canada’s Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction) and Night Driving, a collection of short stories. His stories and essays have appeared in many publications, including The Atlantic and Tin House. Behrens will read from and sign the new paperback edition of his novel The O’Briens (Vintage), an unforgettable saga of love, loss, and change spanning half a century in the lives of a restless patriarch and his splendid, tragic, ambitious clan.
