The 11-mile stretch of highway between Woodman Road and Monument normally sees about 200,000 cars a day. The aim is to add a third lane of traffic in each direction to break a bottleneck that causes daily backups. State Project Manager Dan Hunt says most of the work will be in the median or on the shoulders.

“During the day we’ll maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction, so if they have a lane closure, that is at night.”

Speed limits in that stretch will be lowered by 10 miles per hour. Hunt expects work to begin soon in the median between Woodman and Academy Boulevard. The project is scheduled to last through 2014 with most of the road work completed this year.
