This month we’re talking about politics and elections. The El Paso County ballot this year is quite large, with national, state, and county races and issues to consider, and even some special district measures (sample ballot). By comparison, the Pueblo County ballot is smaller, but still with national, state and local measures to consider (sample ballot).

President Eisenhower Talks Science in Boulder

Fifty-eight years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first US President to visit Boulder. He was there to dedicate a new federal laboratory, the Central Radio Propagation Lab. That day, Boulder’s schools were closed and a crowd half the size of Boulder’s population came to hear the president speak. Audio recordings from the ceremony were recently discovered, and Boulder’s Carnegie Branch Library made them publicly available. From KGNU, Jim Pullen brings us this glimpse at Ike’s 1954 speech.

A Political Train Wreck

While many pundits and political prevaricators have argued that the present political situation in the United States is a figurative train wreck, local historian Richard Marold explores the history of a literal political train wreck that was organized by the Democratic Party in Colorado in 1896.

  1. Judi says:

Impossible! How can one say “large cities like Denver and Pueblo, and smaller cities like Colorado Springs”?
The Springs population is nearly 4 times that of Pueblo.

    • Andrea Chalfin News Dir. says:

      Hi Judi,

Thanks for listening and commenting. If I picked out the right spot in the conversation, this is the exact quote:

“…when political scientists say the ‘Front Range,’ they don’t mean mountains at all. They mean this large 80% of the state that lives in this 150-mile north-south strip. And that north-south strip, because it has the center city of Denver, the center-city of Pueblo, because it has close-in suburbs of Denver, mainly in Arapahoe and Jefferson Counties, because it has more spread out, small cities like Colorado Springs, we have a little bit of everything on the Front Range…”

It’s not a comparison of cities by size; rather, it’s a description of the north-south strip of the Front Range. Colorado Springs is a small, spread out city generally speaking.
