95% of parking meters in downtown Colorado Springs will now have longer time limits. As KRCC’s Katherine-Claire O’Connor reports, the goal is to help promote downtown businesses.

The meters are in the heart of downtown, and the ones remaining unchanged will do so at the request of some nearby businesses. Project organizer Nick Kittle says he doesn’t expect the change to dig into parking ticket revenues.

“I certainly expect there will be a nominal decrease in amount of tickets issued because now instead of being able to plug a meter for one hour, people will be able to plug it for a longer period of time like two hours.”

Besides longer meter time, Kittle says there’s also now a random and roving lottery, where two undisclosed meters are completely paid for by the city each day. Kittle also expects meters will begin accepting credit cards sometime next year. For KRCC news, I’m Katherine-Claire O’Connor.
