Even when he was a young boy, Jonboy Meyers knew he wanted to draw comics and had a talent for it. The son of a Military Policeman, he grew up in Colorado Springs reading war comics and drawing constantly. Eventually, he discovered Captain America and superheroes and thought his destiny was sealed.

But as is the case with many artists (and superheroes), a great many obstacles and a long journey lay between him and his dreams: disapproving teachers, a detour through college as a science major, and years of work for the Colorado Springs Utilities.

But after years of flirting with art schools and working on the periphery of the comic book industry, Meyers got a huge break after submitting his portfolio to Marvel Comics: they asked him if he wanted to draw a new line of Spiderman.

Now in his mid-30s, Meyers is something of a late-bloomer by comic book industry standards. He sat down with us to show us his portfolio (see the brief audio-slide show above) and talk about his journey, the process of putting together a comic book, how he stuck with it and the recent death of his wife (audio below).

Whether you’re a comics fan or just want to hear a great story about the difficulties and payoffs of following your dreams, it’s a rare opportunity to get a glimpse into the mind of an accomplished and hard-working comics artist right here in our own back yard.
