We recently took a field trip to the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum in downtown Colorado Springs where we had occasion to speak with curator Doug Mudd about the museum’s current exhibit, A House Divided, Money of the Civil War. The exhibit explores the roles the monetary systems of the North and the South played in waging the Civil War, while also providing an insight into the development of the dissociation of currency directly backed by silver or gold in the United States. Though our nation is far removed from the Civil War, there are interesting resonances with regard to present-day monetary policy in the face of the economic downturn.
